Accelerating Women's Health with Research

Give Now to Move Women's Health Research Forward

Dr. Doris Howell - Our Founder Howell Foundation for Women's Health Research

“How many of you have wives;
how many of you have daughters;
how many of you have sisters?
And I know you all have mothers…

What do you do to help them stay healthy?”

The need for women’s health research and how you can help accelerate solutions for the most pressing issues of the women in our community.

The Doris A. Howell Foundation for Women’s Health Research is dedicated making a long-term, positive impact on women’s health for the sake of women, their families and the communities in which they live.

We advocate for the health of generations of women in our community with three key initiatives:

  • Early access to cutting-edge research to promote self-advocacy for the women of our community
  • Inspiring and funding scholars to conduct critical research affecting women’s health
  • Awarding grants to scientists who partner with community organizations to research the health issues affecting underrepresented women in our community

Historically, women have been either underrepresented, or excluded in medical research efforts.  By focusing on women-specific health issues, we  serve to close the gender disparities in medical research that may lead to adverse outcomes for women.

Your investment supports an emerging scientist and contributes to a lifetime of furthering women’s health, family health and the health of our community. Today’s Howell Scholar  raises the importance of science dedicated to women’s health.

With your support, today’s Howell Scholar will have the tools to discover the next scientific breakthrough  in women’s health research.

“We have entered a new era in Women’s Health. Tomorrow’s research breakthrough depends on what we do today to make a difference in the future of healthcare.  It’s an honor to be part of this incredible group of people who believe in women’s health causes.”

The Impact of a Howell Scholars

Where are they now?

“My name is Dan Hemmati.  I am a past award recipient from the University of California, San Diego.  I am writing to let you know of an interesting development in the news this week.

As you have probably seen by now, the actress Angelina Jolie recently decided to undergo a full mastectomy after testing positive for a mutation of the BRCA1 gene.  Mutations of this gene have been known to result in a much higher rate of breast cancer among women.

What you may not know is that your assistance helped fund the research that led to the discovery of the molecular mechanism of cancer from the mutated gene.

Your Foundation does amazing work and I would be happy to help if you have any questions. Thank you again for everything.”

Charles Mordaunt
2013 Howell-CSUPERB Scholar

“The Howell Scholarship Award provided recognition, encouragement, and funding that greatly improved my application and transition into a PhD program. It also helped to instill in me the importance of including women in scientific research. As a PhD student, I studied the role of epigenetics in both autism and Wilson disease, a rare liver disorder. I recently started a new position at a pharmaceutical company, where I’ll be using genomic data to identify new drug targets.

My current priority in women’s health is ensuring that the studies I’m involved in include women and consider the differences in how women might be affected by disease or respond to treatments.”

Hoejeong Kim
2018 Howell –UCSD Scholar

“The Howell Scholarship Award gave me a sense of belonging in these places of higher education. In the span of a year, I went from struggling to put on a glove to presenting my project on tracking stem cell-like cells in the placenta over gestation. The award was like a wind against my back, letting me know my pursuit towards medicine was the right path.

I am currently working as the Program Assistant & Peer Education Coordinator for CARE at SARC, the Sexual Assault Resource Center at UCSD. I develop the training practicum for new volunteers, mentor students, and create educational programs that are aimed to prevent violence and create a safer campus culture through community engagement — all that while applying for medical schools.”

Loralie Woods, PhD, RN-BC 2019 Howell- USD Hahn School of Nursing Scholar

“The Howell Scholarship Award was essential to completing my PhD dissertation. I was able to use the funds to purchase a computer to run high powered statistics. Thus, I was able to analyze three years of data.

“I am the Director of Inpatient Operations at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital. I am responsible for creating the vision for nursing practice and creating a safe environment for patients and nurses.  My focus areas are:

  • Supporting women who need substance use treatment and recovery services
  • Supporting working mothers
  • Fighting Stigma of Mental Illness”

Maryanne Sorge Family Nurse Practitioner Friend of Howell Foundation

Although women live longer than men, they bear a greater burden of diseases & disability. I’m privileged to serve on the Howell Foundation Board of Directors to help this exceptional organization promote women’s health research through its student & community engagement research awards.”

Michelle LaCroix
Andrea Z. Lacroix. Ph.D. Professor & Director of the Women's Health Center of Excellence UC San Diego

For me, the Howell Foundation is about Education. Research. Next Generation. I learn so much about women’s health from the top physician researchers and scientists in San Diego. Knowing that my contribution is going toward women’s health research scholarships is rewarding.
